How The Force Awakens Brought Alec Guinness Back to Say "Rey"

In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the filmmakers creatively integrated the voice of Alec Guinness, who portrayed Obi-Wan Kenobi, to say the name "Rey" despite his passing in 2000. This was achieved by manipulating existing audio from the original trilogy.

How They Did It

  1. Source Material: The line used was taken from a scene in A New Hope, where Obi-Wan Kenobi says "afraid." The filmmakers isolated this audio and edited it to extract the sounds needed to create the word "Rey"
  2. Audio Manipulation: By removing certain phonetic elements from "afraid," they were able to craft the sound of "Rey." This involved cutting out parts of the original audio and adjusting it to fit the context of Rey's Force vision
  3. Collaboration with Ewan McGregor: Ewan McGregor, who played Obi-Wan in the prequels, also recorded lines for this sequence. His voice was blended with Guinness's to enhance the moment when Rey hears guidance from Obi-Wan

This innovative approach allowed the filmmakers to honor Alec Guinness's legacy while seamlessly integrating his voice into a new narrative context, showcasing the advancements in sound editing and production techniques within modern filmmaking.
