Actors Who Turned Down the Role of James Bond: Notable Rejections

Several actors have turned down the iconic role of James Bond multiple times, with notable examples including:

  • Liam Neeson: Approached for the role after his success in Schindler's List, Neeson was reportedly interested but ultimately declined due to concerns about typecasting as an action hero. Additionally, his then-fiancée Natasha Richardson made it clear that she would not marry him if he took the part, leading him to walk away from the negotiations
  • Hugh Jackman: The Logan star was offered the role but turned it down several times, particularly because he disliked the campy tone of the Bond films during Pierce Brosnan's era. Jackman sought creative control to portray a darker version of Bond, which was not guaranteed, resulting in him passing on the opportunity
  • Timothy Dalton: Although he eventually accepted the role in 1986, Dalton was offered the part multiple times before that but declined due to feeling too young and later expressing dissatisfaction with the direction of the franchise at that time. He was concerned about becoming just another actor in a long line of Bonds
These actors highlight how personal choices and career considerations often influence such significant decisions in Hollywood.
